Coretta Social Club was founded in 1968 on a newly integrated campus. The vision began in Hogarth Student Center when four young, intelligent, African-American women saw the need for an organization that would represent the growing number of African-Americans enrolled in a once predominantly white institution. The organization would be an outlet for African-American women to express their ideas, opinions, and concerns regarding their university campus and community. Founded as a social interest group, the organization was named in honor of Coretta Scott King because of her dedication to social change. Since its humble beginnings the club has striven to maintain the club's traditions and the founders' vision along with the high standards of MUW. The club's objectives include encouraging individuality, strengthening character through leadership and upholding civic responsibilities. The club attempts to provide services and programs that help promote human welfare. The members diligently dedicate themselves to servicing the "W" campus and most of all to uphold
an everlasting commitment of sisterhood to each other. The Coretta Social Club has become a vital part of MUW's campus life. The social club sponsors has become a vital part of MUW's campus life. The social club sponsors and participates in numerous activities on campus. These events include an annual unity fashion show which encourages unity and respect for individual differences and activities to celebrate African-American history month. We, also do volunteer work off campus including Highway Clean-ups and volunteering in classrooms for
younger children.
